 PTO Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

(in alphabetical order)
5th Grade Citipass Book Sales
The sale of Citipass coupon books helps reduce the cost of the 5th grade class trips for each 5th grader.
Volunteer opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help coordinate the sales of the books to the St. Gabriel community and deliver the books to students when they arrive.
Academic Games
*Chair needed (this will not be available for students if there is no chair)
Academic Games is an after school club for grades 4 and 5, it is a team of students who study particular areas (ie: presidents, equations and propaganda) and then they compete against other area school teams.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parents are needed to help organize Academic Game meetings after school and to teach the material the students will be tested on. (The curriculum is standard for all schools participating and materials will be provided.)
Art By Me
A spring fundraiser in which St. Gabriel families may purchase professionally reproduced items using personally designed drawings by their child. 
Volunteer Opportunities:   Parent volunteers will assist in the sorting and processing of received orders, as well as the distribution to classrooms upon delivery.
Auction
Largest St. Gabriel fundraiser with planning that begins 10 months prior to the event and results in an evening of fundraising fun and success!
Volunteer Opportunities: Numerous opportunities for parent volunteers! Please see the school website under “Auction” to see the complete list. Opportunities include being part of the solicitation team to obtain donations from area businesses to be auctioned, being a part of the classroom art project team, or the class basket team. Or help with reservations or data entry of items donated. Other opportunities include helping with check in the night of the auction, or being a table hostess, or helping with the check-out process. Lots of help is needed with this important St. Gabriel fundraiser!
Back to School Movie Night
A night of fun in the school cafeteria! A movie night open to all St. Gabriel School families.
Volunteer Opportunities: Help organize and publicize the event, assist with set up and clean up.
Bingo
A night of Bingo, prizes, food, and fun!  Held in the school cafeteria, all family members are welcome from toddlers to seniors. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Organize & publicize the event, obtain prizes and assist with clean-up. 
Book Exchange
Used books are donated by kids and parents then resold during lunch time for $.25 each.  The sale is hosted once by each grade and the proceeds of that sale are distributed to the grades to offset a project or fieldtrip of their choosing.   
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers will assist the students with a monthly book exchange, six per year. (3 hours each exchange) Siblings welcome!
Book Fairs
Provide students an opportunity to purchase books during their library time.  This is a large and academically oriented fundraiser for the school.  The book fairs are held twice a year.  We also offer a family night with prizes and costume character.  
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to assist as cashiers, to help children select books and to write their book wish lists. The schedule is very flexible and includes evening shifts.
Bridging Ceremony
 A reception is organized honoring the rising middle school students.  The ceremony is held in the church the last week of school followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to help set up, decorate, bake and clean up.
Cafeteria
Parent volunteers assist cafeteria staff during lunch periods by passing out beverages or manning the ice cream cart.  
Volunteer Opportunities:   Many parent volunteers are needed to sign-up for one or more 2-3 hour shifts per month.
Catherine’s House
This committee works to identify needs at Catherine’s House, (a transitional housing program for women and children who are homeless) and then coordinates St. Gabriel’s efforts to meet those needs.  A large effort is made during the Christmas holidays and then as needed during the year.  (For example, a “baby shower” to gather baby items in the fall and summer lemonade stands to help raise funds for school supplies.) 
 Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to help during the donation drives.
Catholic Schools Week
A national celebration of Catholic Schools and the education they provide to our children.  Festivities involve our students, faculty and staff, parents and the community at large.  Events are planned for each day of the designated week.
Volunteer Opportunities:   Parent volunteers provide support and assistance to the school administration during the week of events planned in honor of Catholic Schools. 
CCHS Tailgate
A PTO sponsored tailgate event for St. Gabriel School families at a Charlotte Catholic High School football game.
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to help organize and set-up and help with food, which is largely PTO provided.
Chess Club
Chess club meets once a week before school for lessons and competition.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers needed to provide support to the chess chairs and the club as needed.
Dad’s Club
New for 2011 – ideas for this club include: attend back-to-school events selling items; Dad’s socials; Golf Outings; 4th & 5th grade lock-ins; work days around the school; Panther/Checker Game socials.
Volunteer Opportunities: Dad volunteers are needed to help organize these activities and plan what types of things should be supported and participated in by this new club.
Donuts for Dads
Donuts, coffee, and juice are served from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. on a morning set aside to honor all fathers, grandfathers, uncles and any other significant “father figures” in our children’s lives. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to help set up, serve food and drinks and help clean up for this annual event.
Faith Advisory
The Faith Advisory committee provides support and enhancement to the religious formation received by St. Gabriel students. Various programs are scheduled throughout the year, such as The Living Rosary, The Living Stations of the Cross, Prayer Card distributions, Bulletin Boards with Faith Awareness messages, and other faith-related activities throughout the year.
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to help plan, organize, and prepare the faith advisory programs.
Family Support
Upon the unfortunate event of death, need or sickness, the Family Support Committee will provide meals, flowers, memorials, transportation, etc. to assist the families of St. Gabriel School with their needs.  
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers needed to prepare meals or provide transportation as needed.
Girls on the Run and Let Me Run

Hospitality Committee
Help make new St. Gabriel families feel welcome!
Volunteer Opportunities: Assist new families by attending summer socials and answering questions about our school community.
International Fair
A one or two-day event held for all St. Gabriel students.  Parent volunteers present or arrange for outside resources to provide information and points of interest regarding countries from around the world. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to organize and support the event.  Volunteers will determine the topic, arrange for presentations and coordinate student attendance with the school staff.
Lego Club
Come and build in an afterschool program! All students and grade levels welcome.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers needed to help plan and organize Lego Club meetings.
Library Long Range Planning
Help the school librarian plan for and allocate her PTO-provided budget. This might mean researching and recommending relevant literature, media materials and/or technology.  Work with head librarian to encourage collection development and further purchase and use of relevant technology, as well as other library support materials.
Volunteer Opportunities: Help carry out library long range plan.
Lunch and Learn
An opportunity for St. Gabriel School parents to gather and listen to educational lectures on a variety of topics.
Volunteer Opportunities: Help obtain and coordinate speakers of interest to the school community and publicize the events.
Lost & Found
Accumulated items are sorted and cleared from the Lost & Found bins monthly.  If items cannot be matched back to students, they are cleaned and donated.  
Volunteer Opportunities: Time commitment of 2 hrs. per month to assist in the organization and cleaning of clothing, etc.
MACS Open House
A critical component of our marketing effort, this is a coordinated open house across all MACS Elementary schools.  The MACS Open House committee prepares materials for the open house events and provides tours and answers questions for prospective families. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Multiple parent volunteers are needed to give school tours and answer questions. ( 2 - 3 hour shifts)
MACS Phon-a-thon
MACS Phon-a-thon is a telephone fundraiser for the MACS Foundation.  MACS Foundation provides funding for teacher grants, special programs and technology throughout the school and impacts every student.  MACS Foundation exists to support the MACS System but is a separate entity. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to call potential donors. Evening volunteer hours (about 2 hours) are needed (usually on two different nights.)
Mad Science
After school science club for St. Gabriel School students
Volunteer Opportunities: Provide assistance and support to the club as needed
Me and My Guy Dance
An evening set aside for our female St. Gabriel students and their fathers or any other significant “father figures”. The dance is held in the school cafeteria.  Refreshments are provided. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed for planning, setup, food, and cleanup.
Mother and Son Event
An event planned to encourage our male students and their moms or “moms for the night”, to get out and have some fun together. This activity might be a shared movie, night out at the ballpark or any other appropriate event of the committee’s choice. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed for event planning and to follow through on executing the planned activity.
Mother Daughter Book Club- Grade 2
Second grade girls and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Daughter Book Club- Grade 3
Third grade girls and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Daughter Book Club- Grade 4
Fourth grade girls and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Daughter Book Club- Grade 5
Fifth grade girls and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Son Book Club- Grade 2
Second grade boys and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Son Book Club- Grade 3
Third grade boys and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Son Book Club- Grade 4
Fourth grade boys and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Mother Son Book Club- Grade 5
Fifth grade boys and their mothers meet to choose books to read and discuss as a group.
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help plan and organize book club meetings.
Muffins for Moms
Muffins, coffee and juice served are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. on a morning set aside to honor all mothers, grandmothers, aunts and significant “mother figures” in our children’s lives. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Multiple volunteers are needed for this two-hour event that takes place once a year.
Newcomers
A group dedicated to welcoming new St. Gabriel families and answering questions and concerns they might have about our school.  Events are planned to assist them with uniforms, cafeteria visits, and other social gatherings before the new school year begins.  
Volunteer Opportunities:  Multiple parent volunteers are needed to assist during with preparation for the newcomer events (stuffing information packets and setting up for social events) as well as with personal phone calls to offer assistance with questions and coordination of a group activity at a local park or pool for new families during the summer.
Playground & Outdoor Facilities Long Range Planning
Work with administration and VP Long Range Planning to determine necessary maintenance and enhancements to the outdoor facilities.  This might range from selecting playground equipment to enhancing the outdoor classroom to planting flowers in various pots.   As needed, recruit volunteers to help with the labor intensive components. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Numerous parent volunteers are needed throughout the school year for clean-up and general maintenance.
POPS (Parents Offering Prayers)
A prayer group consisting of parents who meet after designated school or grade-level masses to pray for the written intentions of the students and teachers.  
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers pray for the needs of each individual classroom, as well as the general needs of the school and its children. 
Recycling Program
Volunteer Opportunities: Assist students with maintaining our Recycle Program. Volunteers are needed to supervise students as they carry paper and plastic to designated bins.
Resource Room      
Inventory and materials in the teachers’ resource room is kept organized. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to coordinate and obtain teacher requests and to help with the organization of inventory.
School Directory
Compilation of the school directory. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers collect directory data, assemble information and distribute directories. Takes place at the beginning of the school year.
School Supplies
Our lower grade students are required to purchase school supplies as part of a bulk purchase program.  This type of ordering cuts down considerably on the waste and redundancy of each student ordering his own supplies.  As a service to our families, we also offer the opportunity for our remaining students to purchase a complete set of supplies per their teachers' request.  Again, this is a service to our families; the prices reflect the retail cost passed along to our families.  The PTO runs this program in support of our teachers and administrators. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  One person to coordinate orders from the teachers and work with the supplier to figure out pricing.  Additionally, a team of people are needed to receive and help distribute the ordered supplies shortly before the beginning of the school year.
School Tours
Provide school tours and answer questions regarding our school for prospective families.
Volunteer Opportunities:  Train for and give guided tours of St. Gabriel School.  Coordinate with school office.
Talent Show
St Gabriel students display their special abilities in the annual school talent show. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers assist with this production. Responsibilities would include tickets, marketing, rehearsals, costumes and student organization.
Teacher Appreciation
The teacher appreciation committee honors the teachers and staff of St. Gabriel School. A luncheon is held at the beginning of the school year and later, a full week of activities are planned to express appreciation for our teachers and school staff. 
Volunteer Opportunities:  Numerous parent volunteers are needed to assist with planning and carrying out these activities.
Technology Long Range Planning
Work with administration and VP Long Range Planning to determine technology needs for the school.
Volunteer Opportunities: Assist with researching possible technology purchases for the classrooms and school.
Uniform Exchange
Organize the inventory of donated, used uniforms.  These uniforms should be made available periodically throughout the school year so that school families can take them as needed.  Uniforms that are in good condition are accepted.   
Volunteer Opportunities:  Parent volunteers are needed to sort, organize and periodically make uniforms available for parents to preview and take as needed.
Website
  • Content Writers:  Content writers are needed to obtain information for the various sections of our school website. The volunteers will then develop the content for each section according to consistent website guidelines. Previous writing or communications experience a plus. Content writes are not required to input information into the website. The time commitment is flexible.
  • Website Development:  Parent volunteers are needed to continually update the website and ensure information is accurate. Website development experience is not required, but would be helpful. Volunteers must be comfortable working with software packages and learning new skills. The time commitment is flexible.
Volunteer Opportunities: A small committee of parent volunteers is needed to keep our website current and informative.  Time commitment will vary, but most of the work can be done from home.
Yearbook
Work with a St. Gabriel staff representative to organize and assist select 5th grade students in preparing the annual St. Gabriel school yearbook. 
Volunteer Opportunities: Parent volunteers are needed to help select students to participate, gather and organize photos and ensure that the schedule is met for yearbook submissions.
