The curriculum at St. Gabriel Catholic School is rich in diversity and opportunity for students to ehance their learning experience. Parent volunteers assist in the classroom with special enrichment activities like Junior Achievement, Math Superstars and Biztown. Our library participates in the Accelerated Reader program in which children can take computerized reading comprehension tests, and the school competes in the World Math and Spelling Days each year. Many of our after school clubs, such as MAD Science, Math Club, Chess Club and Book Club also provide enrichment within the academic environment.
In addition to these activities, St. Gabriel is proud to offer a LEAP Program (Learning Enrichment Activities Program) with a dedicated teacher. The LEAP program is designed to provide appropriate challenges for our students, and to generate a genuine enthusiasm that develops a lifelong love for learning. Learn more about the LEAP program.
LEAP (Learning Enrichment Activities Program)
LEAP provides enrichment for St. Gabriel students on three levels. Each classroom attends a 45-minute class once a week (K-3) or biweekly (4-5). The lessons for each class support and enrich the North Carolina Standard Course of Study science or social studies units taught in the classroom. In addition, LEAP offers advanced students (K-2) weekly small reading group enrichment. Students are evaluated by classroom teachers on their reading scores and work habits. Those students who meet criteria spend three 45-minute periods a week involved in language arts enrichment activities in the LEAP room. Because the LEAP program is designed to provide appropriate challenges for our students, and to generate a geniune enthusiasm that develops a lifelong love for learning, St. Gabriel's LEAP program includes the entire school community with school-wide contests and Math Club. Weekly contests are presented school-wide and may include "Words on the Wall", "Where in the World", "Antique Road Show", "Math Challenge Project", "Science Trivia", and "Brain Puzzler" questions. Math Club meets every morning from 7:00am to 7:45am in the Leap room. All grade levels are welcome and various math activities are offered daily for each level. No sign-up is required.
